Day trips from Izmir: a guide to choosing your route

How to choose between Ephesus, Foça, Bergama (Pergamon) and a city tour by time, interests and group type.

With its ancient cities, coastal towns and villages all around, Izmir is a rich base for day trips. With so many options, the real difficulty is deciding: Ephesus, Foça or Bergama (Pergamon)? The right route depends on how much time you have, your interests and who you are going with. This guide puts the routes side by side to make the decision easier.

Work out the time first

Choosing a route often depends more on energy than on distance. The longer the road, the shorter the sightseeing time, and the group gets tired. For families with children or older passengers, choosing the shorter road adds to the enjoyment of the day.

On a day trip, the travel time within the day directly affects the time left for sightseeing. The approximate figures are as follows and vary with traffic: Izmir to Selçuk/Ephesus approximately 60–75 minutes, Izmir to Foça approximately 60–75 minutes, Izmir to Bergama (Pergamon) approximately 90–110 minutes. Double the one-way travel time; what is left is the real length of the visit. As the road to Bergama (Pergamon) is long, an early start in the morning makes sense.

A short look at the routes

Each route offers a different mood. The summary below sketches a framework for a first decision.

  • Ephesus and Şirince: The ancient city is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is a classic choice for history lovers and first-time foreign guests. A day combined with Şirince offers history and village atmosphere together. For details, see the Ephesus–Şirince route page.
  • Foça: A seaside town; suitable for those looking for walks, fish and a quiet day. The Foça route can be arranged flexibly between a half day and a full day.
  • Bergama (Pergamon): Its ancient city is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It needs a longer drive but is rewarding for those with an interest in archaeology. Details are on the Bergama route page.
  • Izmir city tour: Short travel time and high flexibility; suitable for passengers with limited time.

Consider what kind of traveller you are

The same route means different things to different passengers. For a historian, Ephesus can take a whole day, while for a family a few hours may be enough. Treat the table as a starting point, then adjust it to your own priorities.

When choosing a route, look not only at where you are going but at the stops on the way. For example, setting aside part of the afternoon in Şirince for the village atmosphere balances the tiredness of the ancient city visit. A lunch stop by the sea in Foça, and leaving time to rest at sites in Bergama (Pergamon) that need climbing, keep the day running smoothly. If such details are shared in the quote discussion, the route is built accordingly.

Season and timing

In summer, coastal routes (such as Foça) can be busier; in winter and the shoulder seasons, the days are shorter. Setting the evening return time by daylight is important, especially for visits to ancient sites.

Midday heat at ancient sites can be tiring in summer. Starting early in the morning and continuing after a break in the shade at midday often makes for a more comfortable day. For the current opening hours and entry conditions of museums and archaeological sites, we recommend the Ministry of Culture and Tourism museums page; institutional information may change.

Group size and vehicle

For groups of up to six, the Mercedes-Benz Vito VIP is suitable; for groups of ten to sixteen the Sprinter is considered (exact capacity is confirmed in the quote). Travelling all day with the same driver and the same vehicle leaves the choice and length of stops to you. Learning about the places to visit beforehand helps you use the time in the day more efficiently.

The age of the group also affects the choice of route. Ancient sites with long walking distances can be tiring for older passengers; in such cases it is better to increase the number of breaks and shorten the visit. With children, stops that offer plenty of shade and a meal break stand out.

Pre-quote checklist

  1. Decide the date and the target departure time for the day.
  2. State the number of passengers and any child seat need.
  3. List the stops you want to visit.
  4. State the return time, for example an evening flight or a dinner plan.
  5. Read the waiting and extra-time terms in the quote.

If something unexpected happens on the day of the tour, for example the weather, heavy traffic or the group’s tiredness leads you to want to shorten the programme, you can talk to the driver during the day. As waiting and extra-time terms are written in the quote, you know the scope of the change beforehand. A flexible programme makes for a more enjoyable trip than trying to cram the day in.
