Ephesus and Şirince day trip from Izmir by private car

Journey times, order of stops and time planning for an Ephesus and Şirince trip.

Ephesus is an ancient city on the UNESCO World Heritage List and one of the best-known places to visit on a day trip from Izmir. Şirince is a nearby village known for its narrow streets. It is possible to combine the two in a single day, provided that journey time, waiting and walking pace are worked out in advance. With a private car, you can do that calculation at your own speed.

Journey times

The distance from Izmir to Selçuk and Ephesus is approximately 80 km, and the journey takes approximately 60–75 minutes. From Ephesus to Şirince, the journey takes approximately 15–20 minutes. These times vary with traffic. Over the day, the total travel time, including the return and the transfers between stops, can add up to several hours, so an early start makes the programme more comfortable.

Why choose a private car for the trip?

It is possible to take public transport to Selçuk and change there for Şirince, but your timetable then depends on transport schedules. In a private car, you decide the departure time, how often to stop and how long to wait. Door-to-door travel is also a convenience for families with children, older passengers and those carrying luggage or shopping. Having the driver wait with the vehicle all day means that after walking around the site you return to a car that has cooled down.

The driver is not a guide; they provide the vehicle and the transport. If you would like guidance on the history of Ephesus, you can arrange a licensed guide separately.

Suggested flow for the day

The flow below gives a general idea; exact times vary with the group's pace, the season and how busy it is:

  1. Set off early in the morning from your hotel or address in Izmir.
  2. Drive towards Selçuk, with a short coffee break if you wish.
  3. Visit the Ancient City of Ephesus; allow enough time to walk around the site.
  4. Choose between Selçuk and Şirince for lunch.
  5. Walk around Şirince and visit its workshops and shops.
  6. Return to Izmir in the late afternoon.

For a comfortable visit to the site, the morning hours generally make walking easier; especially in summer, it helps to avoid the midday heat. The exact timing and level of comfort are up to you.

The most critical decision when planning the day is how much time to give Ephesus. The ancient city covers a large area, and walking distances feel different depending on each passenger's fitness. Rather than rushing, it is more efficient to concentrate on the main points and skip some sections if necessary. Follow the official sources for current information about entrances and routes.

There are other places to see around Selçuk besides Ephesus, but trying to fit everything into a day trip is tiring. Leaving Şirince until after midday strikes a good balance, allowing a relaxed break after the walk. If you bring the departure time forward, you also reduce the chance of being caught in the evening traffic on the way back. ## What to know about visiting Ephesus

Opening hours, entrance fees and closing days of museums and archaeological sites may change. Check current information on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism museums page before your visit. For details of Ephesus's World Heritage status and the importance of the site, see UNESCO's Ephesus page. Comfortable shoes, a hat, water and sun protection are the most useful items to bring to the site.

What to watch for in Şirince

Şirince is a small settlement that is explored on foot. The streets can be steep and cobbled, so comfortable walking shoes are important. At weekends and busy times, the vehicle's parking and drop-off point may change; discussing the meeting point with the driver beforehand helps you get back to the car easily after your walk.

If you are travelling as a group, especially with children or older passengers, short rest breaks before moving on to the next stop help everyone keep their energy to the end of the day. The driver coordinates with you on the length of these breaks and the transfers between stops. If a visit unexpectedly runs long, the waiting conditions are written in the quote, so it is possible to discuss the chance of extra time from the start. ## Plan summary

The season also shapes the day. In summer there is little shade at the site, so the first hours of the morning and the combination of hat and water become critical; in autumn and winter the days are short, so it makes sense to start early to finish Şirince without hurrying. On rainy days the ground can be slippery, so choose suitable footwear. In any season, setting aside a full day for the Ephesus and Şirince combination is the most reliable way to keep a relaxed pace.

A small practical note: carry both cash and a card on your Ephesus and Şirince visit, as payment methods at small businesses can vary. Take your phone charger with you, since photography and map use drain the battery. Saving a photo of the meeting point with the driver makes it easier to find the vehicle in a crowded area. ## For your booking
